Teething is an exciting milestone in your baby’s development—but for many parents, it can also be a confusing and sometimes stressful stage. At Smile Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, we’re here to help you better understand the teething process so you can support your child with confidence.
Knowing what to expect, how to recognize the signs, and how to soothe your child can make this stage easier for the entire family.
When Does Teething Start?
Most babies begin teething between 4 and 7 months of age, although it can start earlier or later depending on the child. The first teeth to appear are usually the lower central incisors, followed by the upper front teeth. From there, teeth typically erupt in pairs until all 20 primary teeth are in place—usually by age 3.
These baby teeth (primary teeth) may be temporary, but they play a big role in your child’s development. They help with chewing, speech, and facial development—and they also hold space for the permanent teeth that will come in later.
Common Symptoms of Teething
Each child experiences teething differently. Some show very few symptoms, while others may feel considerable discomfort. Recognizing the signs can help you prepare and respond appropriately. Common teething symptoms include:
- Swollen, tender gums
- Excessive drooling
- Chewing on toys, fingers, or other objects
- Irritability or fussiness
- Trouble sleeping
- Loss of appetite
- Rubbing the ears or cheeks
Some babies may also develop a mild temperature, but a high fever, vomiting, or diarrhea are not typical teething symptoms. If your child has those symptoms, it’s best to contact your pediatrician.
Soothing Techniques for Teething Babies
Fortunately, there are several safe and effective ways to ease teething discomfort. Here are some techniques to try at home:
- Massage the gums: Gently rub your baby’s gums with a clean finger. The pressure can relieve discomfort and help the tooth break through.
- Cold teething toys: A chilled (but not frozen) teething ring or wet washcloth can provide cooling relief to sore gums.
- Silicone teethers: BPA-free silicone toys are soft, safe, and easy for little hands to hold.
- Cold spoon: A metal spoon placed in the refrigerator can be used to gently massage the gums.
- Wipe away drool: Excess drool can irritate the skin. Keep your baby’s face dry and clean using a soft cloth.
- Extra cuddles: Sometimes, extra snuggles and distractions can make a big difference in your child’s comfort.
Avoid teething gels or topical numbing agents unless specifically recommended by your dentist or pediatrician, as some products can contain ingredients that are unsafe for infants.
Establishing Good Oral Habits Early
Teething is a great time to introduce healthy oral hygiene habits. As soon as the first tooth appears, begin brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).
Once two teeth touch, you can begin to gently floss between them. Building these habits early sets the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.
When to See the Dentist
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth erupting. This early visit allows your dentist to:
- Check for normal development
- Provide guidance on teething and oral hygiene
- Offer tips on diet, pacifier use, and thumb-sucking
- Help your child become familiar with the dental office
Establishing a “dental home” early ensures consistent, supportive care as your child grows.
